A “yellow” signal does not always guarantee that trains will run: an important clarification from Ukrzaliznytsia

Ukrzaliznytsia explains that even when a “yellow” air raid alert is in effect, train service may continue; however, if an immediate threat arises for a specific train, its operation may be suspended. This was reported by the railway operator’s press service on Threads.

“A ‘yellow’ alert does not prevent trains from running or passengers from boarding or exiting, but this does not mean that a train will not be stopped if a threat arises,” Ukrzaliznytsia explained.

According to the press service, if the company’s monitoring teams identify a real danger to a specific train, the decision to continue the journey, make a temporary stop, or evacuate passengers to a safe location is made on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the current situation. Ukrzaliznytsia emphasizes that even when the threat level remains stable, emergency response procedures remain in effect.

"If there is a direct threat to passenger safety, we act immediately, because their safety is always our top priority," the company added.

Last week, Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky announced the introduction of new rules governing the operation of the railway and train stations based on the level of air threat. He noted that at the “yellow” threat level, regular train service will continue with all associated operations. In the event of a “red” threat level, boarding and departures will be suspended, and passengers will be directed to shelters.

Politico reported that Russia is increasingly attacking passenger trains in Ukraine with drones, posing a serious threat to the state-run rail network, which is critical to the economy, military logistics, and the transportation of civilians.

On September 16, Russian troops attacked the “Kyiv–Mykolaiv” passenger train three times. Ukrzaliznytsia’s monitoring team took timely measures to evacuate the locomotive crew and passengers, thereby preventing any casualties. On September 13, a Russian attack targeted a passenger train a few kilometers from the Polish border.

Helpful tip: Passengers are advised to stay updated on announcements from the railway service and plan possible evacuation routes in advance in case of an emergency.
