As a result of Russia’s overnight attack, some consumers in eight regions of Ukraine lost power. According to the press service of Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy, due to hostilities and shelling of energy infrastructure, by morning residents of the Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Sumy, Chernihiv, and Kharkiv regions were left without power by morning.
Due to adverse weather conditions, more than 600 settlements in the Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava, Sumy, Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Chernihiv regions also remain without power.
The Ministry of Energy noted that, as of today, no restrictions are expected. Nevertheless, the ministry urged consumers to use electricity sparingly in the evening—from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
On the night of September 22, the Russians attacked an oil and gas facility in the Poltava region using ballistic missiles. The strike caused significant damage, effectively ruling out the possibility of restoring and continuing to operate the facility.
Alexander Kharchenko, director of the Center for Energy Research, noted that Russia could deliberately target not only combined heat and power plants (CHP) but also Kyiv’s boiler houses.
For residents of Ukraine, given the constant threats to the energy infrastructure, it is important to know how to minimize electricity consumption and to have alternative sources of lighting, such as generators or solar panels. It is also important to develop a plan of action in case of a power outage to minimize inconvenience and ensure safety.
